In the Teaching Internship with Experienced Support (T.I.E.S.) Program, the District seeks graduate students and professionals in the field who are interested in teaching at the community college level. T.I.E.S. interns collaborate with full-time, discipline-specific Coast Community College District (CCCD) faculty members, who serve as formal mentors. Through the mentor/intern relationship, T.I.E.S. interns gain first-hand observational and guided instructional experience; insight into course and lesson planning, student engagement techniques, and best practices for classroom management; and opportunities to shape and connect with the community college culture.
We encourage applicants who are committed to student success, inclusive practices, and equitable outcomes.
On this page, you will find background information, answers to frequently asked questions, and contact details for the Program Director and for District Human Resources. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to let us know!
For additional insight into the Program, please view the T.I.E.S. Program video.
The T.I.E.S. Program began in Fall 2017, along with the inception of the District's Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Compliance (OEIC). Through this Program, the District endeavors to
OEIC receives consistent inquiries from current and future graduate students, from professionals in the field, and from college faculty and administrators who are interested in running programs like T.I.E.S. or improving similar, preexisting programs at their institutions.

What are the eligibility requirements for prospective T.I.E.S. interns?
All successful applicants must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
At this time, the T.I.E.S. Program runs every Spring semester (late January to late May). Though this schedule may vary slightly, typically, the job announcement posts in early October, interviews occur in early November, and successful applicants are notified by early December.
To be considered, applicants must submit
Once the application deadline arrives, the applications are reviewed formally, successful applicants are invited for interviews, and a select few receive offers to join the Program.
The Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Compliance (OEIC) receives constant inquiries from prospective interns; the demand for these positions is high. In some cases, applicants do not receive interviews because they do not meet the qualifications listed in the first FAQ on this page. Since we are not able to offer internships in every discipline every semester, we sometimes must turn down applicants based on lack of mentors in the discipline at the time. Please be sure that you meet the eligibility requirements, follow directions for the application carefully, and check that your final submission is as professional as possible.
For a general listing of T.I.E.S. intern responsibilities, please see the "Performance Responsibilities" listed on the sample T.I.E.S. intern job announcement.
One of the inaugural T.I.E.S. interns, who is now a part-time faculty member in the District, refers to the T.I.E.S. Program as "the ultimate backstage pass." In other words, T.I.E.S. interns have access to constant observation and interaction opportunities with a master teacher (their mentor), a supportive and engaged cohort of fellow interns, a Canvas course shell through which the Program Director facilitates communication and information gathering, an array of campus and District events (including but not limited to the Hire Me workshop, various ally trainings, equity-focused events, and informational sessions with respected teachers and trainers), and regular in-person debriefings.
Along with these benefits, T.I.E.S. interns have the opportunity to establish relationships on campus and throughout the District. Interns can expand their professional networks - and thus their prospects for part-time and later full-time employment - through strong connections with their mentors, department chairs, the Program Director, and various other campus contacts.
The disciplines offered change each cycle based on a variety of factors including but not limited to our current mentors, scheduling, and departmental and/or campus need. The job announcement will clearly indicate which disciplines are available during a particular semester.
Interns will be placed at a Coast Community College District (CCCD) College. The specific location will be determined by intern/mentor fit and scheduling needs.
Faculty interested in serving as mentors submit a Mentor Interest Form to the T.I.E.S. Program, and they are selected through a process that includes a variety of requirements. Every mentor is a full-time tenured faculty member at one of the CCCD colleges, and they all have stellar reputations with both their colleagues and their students. Interns and mentors are matched by discipline, by schedule, and - when possible - by complementary nature.
Yes. Interns who complete the Program requirements receive a $500 stipend on the last day of May.
T.I.E.S. interns are not guaranteed employment opportunities beyond the scope of their internships. However, the Program is filled with opportunities, including the Hire Me workshop, targeted debriefings and speakers, and oversight from the mentors, that are designed to make successful and eligible T.I.E.S. interns as marketable for part-time teaching positions as possible. Again, having access to campus events, department meetings, and social opportunities may work to the advantage of a current intern/prospective instructor as the internship draws to a close.
Prospective T.I.E.S. mentors must possess all of these qualifications:
Interested parties must submit a Mentor Interest Formto the Program Director via email.
A select number of candidates will be invited to serve as mentors. Selection will be based on these factors:

T.I.E.S. mentors receive a $500 stipend, which will be paid with the final payroll of the Spring semester at the end of May.
