Spend a month in Florence, one of the world's centers of art and culture. Immerse yourself in the language and culture of the Renaissance in a city still adorned with the sculpture, architecture and paintings of Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Botticelli and Cellini. The Summer in Florence program offers a unique opportunity to expand your educational experience while earning transferable college credit through the Coast Community College District.

Faculty


Franca Hamber

Franca Hamber (pictured above left) is a native of Italy. Before moving to the United States she was educated at the University of Bologna where she studied Italian Literature. She has a B.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of California at Irvine. She is presently a lecturer of Italian at UCI and she has been teaching there for the past 15 years. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Orange Coast College, and has taken students to Florence for the last eight years with the Accent program.

Cultural Program

Cultural learning is an integral part of the Summer in Florence program. You will attend on-site lectures at museums and historical sites within and outside of Florence as well as lectures on local customs and contemporary issues, film evenings, and a performance of ballet, opera or classical music. In addition, you will experience a three-day, two-night excursion to Rome, as well as day trips to Siena/San Gimignano.

Program Price $3,500
plus $150 refundable security deposit
Based on 35 participants

Program price includes:

  • Double occupancy in local student apartments
  • Lunch Monday and Wednesday at a local restaurant while classes are in session
  • Cultural excursions to Siena and San Gimignano, Rome
  • Orientation program upon arrival
  • Overseas information and resource center with ACCENT on-site staff
  • Transfers from and to airport in Italy for group flight participants

Program price does not include:

  • Airfare
  • CCCD enrollment fees (see Academic Credit)
  • Ground transportation in Florence
  • Meals except as listed above
  • $350 optional single room supplement
  • Personal expenses, books, passports, visas, and anything not listed as included.

Final Payment due April 22, 2008.

Insurance

All program participants are required to purchase short-term outbound study abroad medical insurance through an approved District insurance provider. Program participants can find further information on the required study abroad medical insurance at http://www.cccd.edu/studyabroad/about.aspx. Program participants must purchase this study abroad medical insurance no less than 60 days prior to program departure. Failure to purchase the required study abroad medical insurance shall prevent student from participating in the study abroad program.

Academic Credit

An enrollment fee of $20.00 per unit must be paid to Coastline Community College, Golden West or Orange Coast College at the time of registration. In addition non-resident students pay an additional $173.00 for a total of $193.00 per unit. This tuition is state mandated and subject to change.

Study Program

Students will receive credit from Coastline Community College, Orange Coast College or Golden West College. Students will be in one of the following Italian classes approximately four hours per day, five days per week, (depending on class(es) chosen) and will receive a semester of credit for the class completed.

Italian 280 4 semester units
Italian 285 4 semester units
