Study Abroad Faculty Guidelines and Required Standard Forms (Rev. 2009)

Are you a Coast Community College District faculty member interested in organizing a short-term study abroad program? Here is where you’ll find information on how to organize a trip, and the forms and resources you’ll need.

Coast Community College District’s study abroad programs are usually four to six weeks in length, conducted during intersession, spring break or summer, and have an average of twenty students per instructor. Students generally earn three units of college credit for a short-term study abroad program.

By going abroad with a faculty organized group, students have a knowledgeable, personal tour guide, their instructor, to help them navigate in a foreign country and have all their travel arrangements taken care of. They earn credit and have an opportunity to travel and learn. An instructor receives his/her salary for teaching a three unit course and all of his/her travel costs, except meals and incidentals, paid for via the tour package. These short term travel abroad opportunities are truly a win/win for students and the instructor. Like most things, there is preparation and follow-up but according to almost everyone…it is well worth the effort!

Experienced faculty and program providers agree that faculty who take students abroad possess some similarities:

  1. The instructors are motivated, enthusiastic and committed to their study abroad plan. Make no mistake about it- it requires time and organization.
  1. The instructors are steadfast in initiating and following up with the administrative process on campus and at the district- getting department and board approval, getting provider contracts completed and signed, and making sure Risk Services gets the necessary documents to support the course.
  1. The instructors recruit, recruit and recruit, especially the “first-timers”. Returning faculty have a reputation and referrals from past trips. A “first time” faculty member must build a great reputation. The students go on the trips because they like and appreciate the talents of the faculty leader.

If your skills match those outlined above, we hope you will join the ranks of enthusiastic study abroad faculty from the Coast Community College District- your dream will soon become reality!
