What’s on
offer?
- Study Abroad is a
rejuvenating life-changing experience, giving students a new perspective
on the
world beyond borders,
people of other nations,
and their own life in the USA. As Proust wisely put it: “the
real voyage of discovery consists not just in being in new lands,
but in seeing
with new eyes.”
- The London 05 academic
program proudly presents:
Theatre Arts 101: An introduction to London theatre,
encompassing contemporary & Shakespeare,
presented in lecture-discussion and theatre visits. Taught by a
London-based Theatre Arts professor.
History 135: British History since the late medieval age, with
a London focus, presented in lecture-discussion and “hands-on history” field
trips. Taught by CCCD faculty and program leader Professor Moore
(more details see below).
Both courses are UC/CSU transferable and worth 3 units
each (total = 6 credits). You may take one or the other
or both. No classes on Fridays!
- The program price includes:
- Shared
occupancy room in a central London student apartment with kitchen,
bathroom, living area, television
(it’s in English!!), and
telephone.
- Four theatre performances
and a backstage tour of the Globe Theatre (all program
students whether you take
Theatre
Arts 101 or not).
- Two out-of-town
one-day excursions to Hampton Court (Henry VIII’s
palace) and one other to be decided – Bath,
Oxford, Stonehenge or Dover.
International Student Identity Card
with limited overseas travel and
accident insurance.
- A Zone 1 London
transit pass (tube and bus).
- Transfers from
and to the airport for group flight participants.
- Orientation program
and welcome reception. The travel contractor
(Accent) makes
available its London center
for information
services. There is a
lending library and shared use of a computer
with Internet access.
TEN very good reasons why you should study abroad in London:
- You
will learn a new language – British English – without
ever having to sit in a classroom.
- You will live in the
heart of a world capital with an energy and excitement that other
cities
only dream about. “When a man is tired of London” Dr.
Samuel Johnson famously observed “he is tired of life”.
- You
can listen to the most famous free speech hang out on earth
at Speakers Corner every Sunday morning at Marble Arch (and contribute?).
- You can travel back
thousands of years and see ancient Egypt, ancient
Mesopotamia
and ancient
Greece all in one day at the British
Museum.
- You can feed the pigeons
and get wet from the fountain spray of Trafalgar Square beneath Lord
Nelson’s column and before the mighty National
Gallery, one of the world’s greatest art collections.
Admission is Free!
- You can buy a copy of
Time Out, shop till you drop down Oxford Street (busiest shopping
street
in Europe), amble
through
outdoor markets,
get poor in Harrods Department Store, eat a burger in
the world’s first
Hard Rock Café, and finish off the evening listening
or dancing to live music of every kind on earth. It didn’t
earn the handle “Swinging
London” for nothing!
- You could sit in on
a session at the House of Commons and learn how to be verbally confrontational
and remain
civil
at the
same time. Free
entry but get in line. Across the street is Westminster
Abbey, sepulcher of royalty for a thousand years.
- You can people-watch
on the underground tube or the top deck of a double-decker bus, stroll
down the Strand
to
a free
street entertainment in Covent
Garden, or listen to a free concert at the church
of St. Martin-in-the-Fields (lunch in the crypt!) or…
- You could take the
Jack-the-Ripper walking tour, see the world’s
largest cut diamond (350-carat Great Star of Africa)
in the Tower of London’ Crown Jewels, climb to the top of St.
Paul’s Cathedral’s
dome, or if you can afford it, ride the London
Eye.
- Feeling tired? Central
London has more open green
and wooded spaces than any other cities of comparable
size
in the
world – St. James’s
Park, Regents’ Park, Hyde Park and Kensington
Gardens. Check out the circumference: Hampstead
Heath, Epping Forest, Greenwich, Kew
Gardens,
Richmond. London has rail tracks the way LA has
freeways.
And remember – it will all
look good on your resume. Graduate Schools and employers look favorably
on those with that special perspective
earned by living and studying overseas.
