The "European Adventure" Study Abroad program to England and France will be offered through Coastline Community College from approximately June 3 to July 16, 2010.
The maximum number of students we are expecting to accept into this Program is 30.
This unique program offers you the best of two countries. Imagine spending the first three weeks of this program in England, then moving to France for the remaining time!
Our Academic Program
Students will earn 6.5 units of transferable college credit while studying art history, French culture, and the French language. Students are required to take the art class and the introduction to French culture class, both of which are taught in English. Students must also enroll in French 180A or French 185A.
* ART 101 "History and Appreciation of Art, Part 2," 3 units (CCC)
This class will be offered by instructor Walker, and is a multicultural survey of art beginning with the Renaissance period through contemporary art. Illustrated lectures, readings and study of current exhibitions.
* FRENCH 180A "Elementary French 1A," 2.5 units (CCC)
Instructor Hastings will offer an introduction to French language, culture and thought with emphasis upon listening, comprehension, speaking, reading and basic writing skills. Students will become acquainted with fundamental sounds, forms and structures of French and will be aware of the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of Francophone countries. This class is equal to the first half of French 180.
* FRENCH 185A "Elementary French 2A," 2.5 units (CCC)
Instructor Hastings will offer an advanced beginning course continuing French 180 or 180B, emphasizing listening, comprehension, reading, grammar and writing skills in elementary French and introducing features of the life and culture of France and francophone countries. Prerequisite: French 180, 180B or equivalent.
* FRENCH 190 "Introduction to French Culture and Geography 1," 1 unit (CCC)
This class, taught by Instructor Hastings, will be a brief overview in English of the history, geography, economic and political systems and culture of the French speaking people and countries.
Faculty
Instructor Claudine Hastings was a French language instructor at Golden West College for twenty-five years, and has since come out of retirement to teach at Coastline Community College.
A native of France, she received her M.A. in French from the University of California at Irvine and has long been involved in improving the quality of foreign language education. Just one example was being awarded a grant to improve articulation of foreign language programs between the California Community College, the University of California, and the California State University systems.
Her previous experience in conducting Study Abroad programs was in 1989 and 1994, when she co-conducted two semester programs to Paris.
She is an active member of Orange County Accueil (OCA), a French organization where French speaking members meet and participate in various cultural activities.
She is married and is involved in many activities like tennis, Pilates, walking, gardening, reading and traveling.

Instructor Heather Walker has been a Coastline art Instructor for two years and has been teaching Art History for over eight years at a variety of other colleges, including Cypress, Santiago Canyon and CSULB. She has a BA and MA from CSULB with a specialty in Italian Renaissance and Western European Medieval Art. She has also served as an assistant instructor for both U.S. History and Western Civilization classes. She teaches Art History and Introduction to Art classes both in-class and online. Instructor Walker has also attended classes in Florence, Italy and Cambridge, England as a Study Abroad student and her experiences led to her decision to lead a Study Abroad program.
She is married and travels extensively in the United States and Western Europe and is active in the Art Historical community. She is eager to share her love of both art and history with her students. What Is Included
You will start the program in London where student accommodations will be in a student residence. While in England, you will visit Bath, Stonehenge, and Salisbury. In London, you will visit the National Gallery of Art, the British Museum, the Tate Museum, Westminster Abbey, and see a play at Shakespeare's Globe Theater.
After relocating to Paris, there are site visits planned to the Musee d'Orsay, the Picasso Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, and Versailles. You'll be whisked away on the TGV (train a grande vitesse) to Nimes in the south of France. While there, you'll visit the Pont du Gard, and go to Arles, Avignon, and Uzes. Upon returning to Paris, you'll visit the Pere Lachaise cemetary and join the French in their most famous holiday, 'la fete nationale' (Bastille Day) on July 14.
Daily lunches on class days are included, beginning in week #2, except for overnight stays in hotels. Breakfasts are included on overnight stays in hotels.
Included in the cost of "A European Adventure" is: double-occupancy accommodations in shared student accommodations, museum entrance fees for class visits and excursions, and overnight excursions. Overnight excursions are one overnight excursion to Bath/Stonehenge/Salisbury, and a three-night stay in Nimes. The cost is estimated to be $5,500, based on at least 25 students. Airfare is not included in the program price.

People residing in America holding a foreign passport should contact their embassy or consulate, as a visa may be required.
Insurance
All program participants are required to purchase short-term outbound study abroad medical insurance through an approved District insurance provider. Program participants can find further information on the required study abroad medical insurance at the Coast Community College District About Study Abroad page. Program participants must purchase this study abroad medical insurance no less than 60 days prior to program departure. Failure to purchase the required study abroad medical insurance shall prevent student from participating in the study abroad program.
