Why Study Abroad?

Understanding the current issues and the events that shape them, as well as an appreciation for other cultures and customs throughout the world, is now basic to good citizenship and to good scholarship.

Coast Community College District
Board of Trustees, May, 1990

Recognizing that on-the-spot, first-hand observation is one of the best means of learning, the Coast Community College District offers college credit classes in locations that improve and enhance the opportunity to learn and grow. Where can you better study art history than Paris or Florence? Or any language in the country where it is spoken?

Study Abroad is a life-changing experience, giving students special perspective on the world beyond their own borders, people of other nations, and their own life in the United States. There is no better way to learn about another country's people, language, history, economy, art and politics. Students studying abroad are enriched academically and personally and find later that graduate schools and employers look favorably on those who have enhanced their perspective by studying overseas.

Short Term Programs

Each year the Coast District sponsors one or more short (up to 10 week) programs which cover a full semester of instruction in one or more classes. These are usually language programs, each led by a District faculty member who accompanies students and oversees the instructional program. The goal is for students to gain a good grasp of the language at their own level and to come to an understanding of the different culture. Language classes may be taught by on-site instructors. Locations vary from year to year. In past years Coast students have studied in Paris, France; Florence, Italy; Kyoto, Japan; Cuernavaca and Merida, Mexico; Barcelona and Nerja, Spain, and Dublin, Ireland. There is also an Art of Western Europe Study Abroad Program. On this program, you will tour Europe to such places as Paris, Versailles, Florence/Lucerne, and Assisi/Rome. Check with the Study Abroad office for details about short-term programs for next year.

How much does it cost?

Summer programs average about $3,300, the fee covering round-trip airfare (except France and Italy), housing, some meals, excursions and cultural events. Other expenses to plan for include class enrollment fees of $11.00 a unit, books, lunches, entertainment, vacation travel, and miscellaneous personal expenses. The amount varies with the location and individual taste and spending habits. Out-of-state students must also plan for out-of-state tuition, currently $154.00 per unit for domestic students.

Who is eligible?

For all semester programs, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be 18 years of age
  2. Completion of English 100 with a grade of 'C' or better
  3. Cumulative GPA of at lease 2.0
  4. A minimum of 12 college semester units

Summer programs, on the other hand, only have one requirement, which is that you are at least 18 years of age.

If you are eligible to enroll at a campus of the Coast District, you are eligible for a study abroad program. Previous language study is not required but it is recommended for non-English speaking countries. Programs are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

What about financial aid?

If you qualify for financial aid, funds awarded can be applied to your Study Abroad experience. Deadlines are October 1 for spring programs and June 1 for fall programs. Funds may not be released until after the semester begins, so you will need to make other arrangements for the payment of required fees. (View our Financial Aid page.)

Where will I live?

Whenever possible, students live with families located in the community surrounding the study center. Homestays are arranged by the travel contractor based on the information you provide about the kind of family you would like. Breakfast and dinner or meal allowance are normally included in all facilities. Student residence halls and apartments are used in some locations.

What about academic credit?

As a student on the study abroad program, you will be enrolled on a campus of the Coast District and will receive credit from that college for your study abroad. In most cases, classes are taught by Coast District faculty in facilities leased by the travel contractor. Language classes are often taught by nationals of the host country. In the cases where it is necessary to engage local instructors, their courses are taught according to District guidelines and the instructors meet District hiring qualifications. Most classes offered through the Study Abroad program are fully transferable to the California State University and University of California systems.
