What does consent mean?

Consent means positive cooperation and agreement to sexual activity. At all times, a person must be free to choose whether to participate or not participate in a sexual act.

  • A person has a right to take away consent at any time during a sexual encounter, even if they have already given consent
  • Previous consensual sex with an individual does not imply sexual consent
  • Consent isn’t just “not saying no,” but active, positive agreement

A person has complete control over her or his own body, and always has the right to refuse sexual contact.
