Seminar
on Charge-Coupled Devices (October 23, 1999)
All You Want to Know About CCD's
| What: | A Seminar on the Design, Operation and Astronomical Applications of Charge Coupled Devices, CCD's, Sponsored by the CSUF PHYSICS DEPARTMENT and ORANGE COUNTY ASTRONOMERS. |
| When: | Saturday, October 23, 1999 - 9AM to 5PM. |
| Where: | California State University, Fullerton - McCarthy Hall 121. |
| Cost: | $25 - Registration Fee; $5 - CSUF Faculty, Staff & Students |
| By: | Dr. Jim Janesick. |
Dr. Janesick is an excellent instructor, formerly with JPL. He is now Executive Vice President of a private CCD development company. He has been PERSONALLY responsible for the design, development, and testing of CCD chips used on the Hubble Space Telescope, Galileo and Cassini spacecraft and is currently working on the Hubble's next generation devices. He is a leading authority on CCDs and is considered to be the "father" of the use of CCDs in astronomical imaging.
This seminar will be a one-day (slightly attenuated/condensed) version of the SPIE industrial training seminar on CCDs which he teaches (at a usual cost of $1500 per person.)
This seminar reviews the remarkable characteristics of charge-coupled devices (CCDs) used in high performance imaging camera systems. The seminar details advances in pixel count (10 k x 10 k arrays), quantum efficiency (spectral coverage of 1 to 11,000 A), charge transfer efficiency (99.9999% efficient per pixel transfer), read noise (sub electron), large dynamic range (greater than 10^6), and high-speed operation (diffusion limited). Technologies used to achieve such high levels of performance are discussed. CCD imaging applications include NIR, visible, UV, x-ray, and particle imaging camera systems. The seminar reviews the CCD technologies responsible for such high levels of performance.
