COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT BOARD ELECTS PRESIDENT

       The Coast Community College District Board of Trustees has elected Walter G. Howald to serve as Board President for 2002. Howald, a Newport Beach resident, was elected at the Board's December 12 meeting.

       Howald was first elected to the Coast District Board of Trustees in 1985. An attorney in Newport Beach, Howald is president of his law corporation, which has a primary emphasis on civil, business and trial law. Howald has been active in

California education for many years. As early as 1966, he served as an advisor to the California State Assembly Higher Education Committee in drafting the Master Plan for Higher Education. Howald previously served as Coast District Board President in 1994 and 1998. He replaces 2001 Board President Armando R. Ruiz.

       The Board also elected Dr. Paul Berger to serve as Vice President for 2002. Berger is a resident of Huntington Beach and a retired high school administrator in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley.

       The Coast Community College District is the seventh largest community college district in the nation in credit enrollment, serving 55,000 students each semester. The district is comprised of Coastline Community College headquartered in Fountain Valley, Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, and KOCE-TV, the district's public broadcasting station.
