The
21 members of the CCCT board are elected by the 72 local governing
boards. Trustee Howald ran for
the Board last year, and was only one
vote shy of being elected. He was appointed to a vacancy on the board
this fall by his colleagues throughout the state.
The
CCCT Board meets approximately six times a year and takes action
on education policy issues before the state Board of Governors and
the Legislature. Policy direction also is provided to staff concerning
statewide educational policy, research initiatives, publications,
workshops and conferences.
“I
look forward to the opportunity to represent the interests of Orange
County’s and California’s community college students, faculty,
staff and elected officials on the CCCT Board,” Howald said.
“This
appointment is both an honor and a responsibility. I join this Board
during an exciting time of change. At this moment, our Governor,
our legislators, and our educators and trustees are examining
how community colleges are funded and governed, and trying to determine
if there
is a better way. I look forward to being involved in that examination,
and ensuring that our ability to serve the students of California
is preserved and enhanced in the process.”
The
CCLC is a nonprofit public benefit corporation whose voluntary membership
consists of
the 72 local community college districts
in California. It was formed in 1990 as the result of a merger
of the
California Association of Community Colleges, the CCCT and
the Chief Executive Officers of the California Community
Colleges.
Howald
has served as a member of Coast Community College District’s
Board of Trustees since 1985, including several terms as
president and vice president. He resides in Trustee Area
5, which includes portions
of Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and the Newport Coast. He
has represented the Coast District on the Orange County Community
Colleges Legislative
Task Force and serves on the Community College Leadership
Initiative Board of Directors.
An
active part of his community, has served on the Board of Trustees
of the Newport Beach Public Library,
and the
Library’s Distinguished
Speakers Series.
Howald
is a graduate of the UCLA School of Law and president of his law
firm, which has a primary
emphasis on civil,
business and
trial
law. He is a member of the American Bar Association,
the California State Bar Association and the Orange County
Bar Association.
