The new trustee lives in Garden Grove and was elected to the Board by the Coast Community College District Student Council. The council includes three student representatives from each of the three colleges in the district - Coastline Community College, Golden West College and Orange Coast College.
Among his duties as student trustee, Shelly will meet with the district student council on a monthly basis to discuss student issues to bring before the board. Though the student trustee is a non-voting member of the board, Shelly has all other rights and privileges of a trustee, including the ability to make and second motions and engage in discussions. Shelly will serve a one-year term, ending in May 2003.
"I'm looking forward to representing all of the Coast Community College District students as Student Trustee," Shelly said. "I feel it is a great opportunity to unite the students of Coastline Community College, Golden West College and Orange Coast College and work together to support District-wide issues such as a potential bond measure."
"The Board is looking forward to working with Mr. Shelly in the coming year," said Board President Walter Howald. "It's so important to have the voice of our students heard at our Board meetings and in the community. We are confident that Derek will represent the students of the Coast Community College District with experience and enthusiasm."
As Student Trustee, Shelly will represent all of the students in the Coast Community College District. "I really want to unite our three campuses by increasing awareness of District Student Council, meeting with school administrators and attending student government meetings on the individual campuses," Shelly said. "My goal is to elevate awareness of the District so that students can take advantage of the many opportunities offered at all three colleges."
Shelly is active in numerous community activities and college life at Golden West College, including serving on the Associated Students of Golden West College, President's Cabinet and District Student Council. A 2000 graduate of Bolsa Grande High School in Garden Grove, Shelly plans to complete his general education requirements at Golden West College and transfer to a four-year university to study education. His career goal is to become a college Student Activities Director.
The Coast Community College District is the seventh largest community college district in the nation in credit enrollment, serving nearly 60,000 students each semester. The district is comprised of Coastline Community College headquartered in Fountain Valley, Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, and KOCE-TV, the district's public broadcasting station.
