Among her duties as student trustee, Angelo will meet with the district student council on a monthly basis to discuss student items of interest to bring before the board. As a non-voting member of the board, Angelo has most of the rights and privileges of a trustee, including the ability to make and second motions and engage in discussions. Angelo will serve a one-year term, ending in May 2002.
Angelo commented on her new post, saying, "I want to make a difference in the world and encourage others to be empowered by this same goal. The only way to make positive changes is to become involved. I will do my very best to creatively enhance our student's college experiences and opportunities on each of the respective campuses in our district."
"The Board is looking forward to working with Ms. Angelo in the coming year," said Board President Armando Ruiz. "We are confident that she will represent the students of the Coast Community College District fairly and with enthusiasm."
As student trustee, Angelo will represent all of the students in the Coast Community College District. "I plan to work closely with the District Student Council, meet with school administrators, stay current through school newspapers as well as attend student government meetings on the individual campuses," Angelo said. "This will enable me to stay informed and connected to the student body populations."
Angelo is active in numerous school and community activities. At Orange Coast College she served as the student representative on the President's Council, a college- wide committee led by OCC President Margaret Gratton. Her recent community activities include planning and organizing the 2001 Youth Dialogue with Chris Anderson, the publisher and CEO of the Orange County Register. She is the founder of the Orange County Youth Ambassador Program, designed to encourage young people in Orange County to participate in citizenship and community affairs. An active community volunteer, Angelo has given more than 1,500 hours of her time to community service activities throughout Orange County.
Angelo plans to complete her general education requirements at Orange Coast College and transfer to UCLA or UCI to study International Relations.
The Coast Community College District is the fourth largest community college district in the nation in credit enrollment, serving 55,000 students each semester. The district is comprised of Coastline Community College headquartered in Fountain Valley, Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, and KOCE-TV, the district's public broadcasting station.
