COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT CLOSED FRIDAYS THIS SUMMER TO CUT COSTS

Orange Coast, Golden West and Coastline community colleges will have expanded hours Monday through Thursday and close on Fridays again this summer in an effort to cut costs on utilities. The Coast Community College District headquarters at 1370 Adams Avenue will also close on Fridays starting June 1. Regular business hours will resume for all District facilities beginning August 20.

NEWS

At a meeting this week, the Coast Community College District Board of Trustees voted in favor of the altered summer schedule to save costs in the face of continued budget cuts from the State. The District adopted this schedule in summer 2003, and realized savings of more than $100,000 in energy costs alone.

“This Board is committed to maintaining broad public access to our facilities throughout the year,” said Board President George Brown. “The continuing budget crisis has forced us to make this change in our summer hours again this year. It is hoped that the expanded hours on Monday through Thursday will make it easier for students and the general public to conduct business with the District and its colleges in a timely manner, despite this reduced schedule.”

“Every dollar our colleges saved through this reduced schedule last summer was put right back into the classroom in the fall,” said Brown. “We were able to offer more classes to our students, despite the continuing budget cuts from the state. We hope this year to save even more.”

All District facilities will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the summer.

The reduced schedule will not affect summer classes at Orange Coast College, Golden West College or Coastline Community College, as summer school classes are seldom held on Fridays.
