To: Coast Community College District Board of Trustees

Through Trustees: Honorable Jerry Patterson and Dr. Lorraine Prinsky

From: Bonnie Bruce, Chair of Chancellor Search Committee

Date: September 30, 2009

Subject: Final Report of Chancellor Search Committee

President Moreno, Trustees, and guests:

On behalf of the Chancellor Search Committee
of The Coast Community College District,
I am pleased to have this opportunity to make
our final report regarding the work of our committee.

To fulfill its duties to hire a Chancellor, the Board of Trustees committed to undertake a
national search and to invite the participation of all affected constituencies in the
selection of qualified candidates through a representative Search Committee. The Board
also identified Dr. Narcisa Polonio, Vice President of the Association of Community
College Trustees as the Search Consultant to provide guidance to the Board and the
Committee that would assure a process that would be inclusive, transparent, and fair.
The Board of Trustees confirmed the Search Committee nominees and noted that each
member would have an equal-weighted voice.

At this time I would like to recognize and thank each member of the Search Committee
for their service and if they are present I would ask that they stand as their name is read.

Jerry Patterson, Board of Trustees
Lorraine Prinsky, Board of Trustees
Michael Battistone, Student Trustee through May 31 and Robert Lane, Student
Trustee who succeeded graduate Michael Battistone.
Wes Bryan, President, Golden West College
Sue Berman, Academic Senate, Golden West College
Lee Gordon, Academic Senate, Orange Coast College
Nancy Jones, Academic Senate, Coastline Community College and representing
the Senate on September 23 and September 24, Pedro Gutierrez
Dean Mancina, Coast Federation of Educators
Michael Mandelkern, Coast District Management Association
Connie Marten, Coast Federation of Classified Employees
Barbara Price, Coast Community College Association/CTA-NEA
Lynne Thissell, Coast Confidential Employees and
Bonnie Bruce, Community Member and chair for a total of 13 voting members

Also present at all meetings and providing commendable services in non-voting
capacities were Christian Teeter, Board Secretary and Search Committee Liaison and
Donna Waldfogel, Human Resources Advisor to the Search Conmnittee.

The Board of Trustees put forth the following charge to the committee:

1. To assist in the search for a Chancellor for Coast Community College District using
the profile statement of desired chancellor qualifications based on the District’s internal
and external constituents.

2. To assist in the conduct of an active national search for a Chancellor following Equal
Employment Opportunity guidelines and considerations as well as the regulations of the
state of California.

3. To follow the timetable for the search that would bring recommendations to the Board
by a certain date.

4. To make periodic reports on the progress of the search.

5. To observe policies of strict confidentiality with regard to candidates, applicants, and
nominees for the position.

6. To recommend three to five candidates in unranked alphabetical order to the Board of
Trustees for its selection of Chancellor.

Dr. Polonio strongly recommended that public forums be held to allow individuals to
come forward and identify the ideal characteristics and the minimum and desirable
qualifications for the next Chancellor.

On the basis of the results of the forums, a profile was developed and recruitment was
launched. Recruitment of candidates included a number of approaches such as placing
advertisements in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Community College Times,
Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Women in
Higher Education, Asian Week, higheredjobs.com insidehighered.com. ACCT also sent
electronic notification to all community college presidents and chancellors throughout the
nation. Recruitment of applicants continued throughout the summer.

The Search Committee held the following meetings:

April 30, 2009 – Organizational meeting to review the search process, confidentiality
guidelines, and review the draft position profile that emerged from the forums and
confirm the timelines.

May 14, 2009 – Adopt Chancellor Position Profile and reconfirm all timelines.

August 18 to August 21, 2009 – Reading and Discussion of Applications and draft
questions for interviews were proposed.

September 21, 2009 – Questions and interview process was finalized. It was also decided
that each candidate would speak on a topic related to California Community Colleges.

September 23 and September 24, 2009 – Individual interviews conducted with each
candidate, and deliberations regarding the candidates.

The Search Committee members dedicated significant amounts of time to orientations,
reviewing over 25 applications in detail, and deliberating in a forum that allowed for
open expression of views. I would like to note that throughout the process there was a
climate of openness, fairness, and respect.

Seven candidates were invited for interviews and four well-qualified candidates are being
moved forward to the Board of Trustees for consideration as semi-finalists. The Search
Committee understands the need for continued confidentiality as the Board begins its
deliberations.

As Chair, I wish to commend the Committee for fulfilling its charge, meeting the timeline
set forth by the Board and I would like to thank those individuals who participated in the
forums and helped develop the profile that guided our efforts. Our outside consultant
ACCT kept the process wide open, competitive, fair and equitable. On behalf of the
Committee, I would like to thank the Board of Trustees for giving us the opportunity to
serve The Coast Community College District and we look forward to hearing the results
of your interviews and deliberations as you choose the next Chancellor of Coast
Community College District.

Chalk Artist Helps Celebrate College, Donors and Little Saigon at “Endow the Future” Ceremony

Cecelia Linayao
Renowned chalk artist,
Cecelia Linayao

The Coastline Community College Foundation recently celebrated a total of more than $1.5 million in donations to college’s endowment fund. The ceremony, held on September 18th at the Le-Jao Center (the college’s campus near Little Saigon in Westminster), was attended by donors, Foundation members, friends of the college, students, faculty, staff and community members.

This money will be part of the college’s permanent endowment and will provide funding for student scholarships and program enhancements for years to come.

Major funding for the Coastline Endowment came from Chieu and Yen Le, Frank and Catherine Jao, Shalini Malhotra, and Dr. Richard Houghton. Chieu and Yen Le are prominent in the Little Saigon community as owners of Lee’s Sandwiches. Frank Jao is the President of the Bridgecreek Group, which owns/manages a number of real estate properties in the area including the Asian Garden Mall on Bolsa Avenue.

As a special nod to the donors, the college, and to the community of Little Saigon, renowned chalk artist, Cecelia Linayao, was on-site to provide a custom—if yet temporary—art piece. Cecelia, based in San Diego, has participated in numerous art competitions over the years and has been recognized for her amazing street art. She created a custom, 8-foot by 8-foot scene on the landing in front of the Le-Jao Center to mark the celebration and the achievement.

Respected OC Pediatrician Leaves $384,000 to Coastline

Dr. Richard Houghton
Dr. Richard Houghton

The Coastline Community College Foundation was recently surprised by a large gift from former Foundation Board Member and well-respected area pediatrician, Dr. Richard Houghton.

Dr. Houghton left 25% of his trust estate to the college–approximately $384,000. In his trust, he prescribed that the money should be used to benefit students needing assistance with basic skills, learning a second language or pursuing a career.

“We are so thankful that Dr. Houghton thought of Coastline when preparing his trust, and we know that our students will benefit from his generosity for many, many years,” said Mariam Khosravani, Coastline Foundation Executive Director.

Dr. Houghton retired from the medical field in 1993, but continued his passion for literacy and education through his work with numerous colleges, including Coastline. In a letter, Dr. Houghton once wrote, “The better education they get means a better world for all.” His donations will help thousands of students get that “better education.” Thank you Doc!.

Coastline Announces New Dean of Military Programs

Joycelyn Groot
CCC Dean of Military Programs, Joycelyn Groot

Coastline Community College recently announced the promotion of Joycelyn Groot to Dean of Military and Contract Education. The position is new to the college as it now combines the lead position of the two departments—Contract Education and Military Programs. Prior to being selected as Dean, Groot served as the director of Coastline’s Contract Education Department. She has been with the Coast Community College District for more than 25 years.

In her new position, Groot is responsible for coordinating all instruction and student services that are specific to Coastline’s military education students. This semester, there are more than 20,000 students enrolled in Coastline courses while they are serving in the military and the program reaches all branches of service. In addition, Joycelyn Groot is continuing her lead for the college’s corporate, workforce and community education programs and services. Under her leadership, the team recently launched a new Career and ACT Center located at the Orange County One-Stop Center.

“My goal is to create an inviting learning community that promotes program growth and student success through quality education, services, and partnerships in the military community,” explained Groot. “Our department plans to create projects that stimulate collaboration among our faculty, our military students, their commands, and the military education offices to promote new ideas, courses, and programs.”

Joycelyn Groot explained that keeping students happy and motivated with interesting programs and good customer service is the key to Coastline’s continued success with these specific groups. The college has a remarkably positive reputation with America’s soldiers and has been named a “Military Friendly School” multiple times by G.I. Jobs magazine. Groot looks forward to the challenge of upholding this image for many years to come.

CCC Dean of Instruction,
Vinicio Lopez

Coastline Community College, with campuses in Garden Grove, Westminster and Costa Mesa, has announced the hiring of a new dean. Mr. Vinicio Lopez has joined Coastline as Dean of Instruction for the college’s Le-Jao Center campus located near Little Saigon in Westminster, a position which was previously held by Interim Dean, Margaret Lovig. Mr. Lopez started his position at Coastline on August 24th
.

In addition, he will oversee the college’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program, which he can personally relate to. “I too am a second language English learner,” he said. “One of my most precious memories is sitting in an evening adult ESL class as a 6 or 7 year old, with my grandmother so that we could both learn English.”

Vinicio Lopez was previously at Los Angeles Trade Technical College where he held the position of Associate Dean of Evening and Weekend College. Prior to that, Mr. Lopez worked at Santa Ana College’s School of Continuing Education, where he was an Assistant Professor of ESL/English Literacy. He also served in the capacity of Civics Coordinator where he developed and inaugurated the technology-based Community Learning Center and then became the ESL/CASAS Coordinator. When asked what his overall goal is, he replied, “It’s for the Le-Jao Center to be viewed as the jewel of Westminster.”

GWC Employee Spotlight

Margie Bunten

GWC Director of Public Relations & Institutional Advancement, Margie Bunten

Margie Bunten, Director, Public Relations & Institutional Advancement, Golden West College Foundation

When Margie Bunten began working at Golden West College 19 years ago, she realized that she had an opportunity to “achieve the career of a lifetime” when she stepped into the position of Director of the Foundation and Community Relations for the college in 1998.

Wearing two hats for the college provided Margie the opportunity to attain notable achievements in both areas. The focus of her work for the Foundation is to enhance resource development as a key component to bringing success to the campus. In her first year as the Foundation’s Executive Director, Margie initiated the Golden West College Gala as both a community celebration of education and fundraising event. That first year, the event raised $46,594. This year, the Foundation held its 12th Annual Gala, raising $202,731 – a 73% increase. Over the course of the past 12 years, the Gala has brought in more than $1.7 million to the campus.

When Margie became Director of Community Relations for the campus, the college was lacking a clear identity. In pursuit of a distinct identity for the campus, she found inspiration in the vitality and uniqueness of Surf City, U.S.A., Huntington Beach.

“As the city’s only community college, I envisioned our future lay in joining with the city as a recognizable icon in California,” said Margie. “In support of this vision, I led the creative team that trademarked our tagline, ‘Oceans of Opportunity,’ created our surfboard logo and purchased our unique outreach vehicle, a 1971 Volkswagen bus affectionately known as ‘G-DUB’. These marketing tools have created an identity that has helped carry the message of our dynamic programs and educational opportunities.”

So, where else does Margie find inspiration? “I am fortunate enough to walk among thousands of students every day. This is inspiring and energizing. Having the opportunity to be personally involved in the success of students has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life.”

“Margie is exceptional, highly motivated and deeply committed to this college and the welfare of our community and students,” says Golden West College President Wes Bryant. “Her dedication enables her success because she truly works from the heart.”

Four Heroes Inducted into OCC Athletic Hall of Fame

Four Heroes Inducted into OCC Athletic HOF

With a perfect combination of laughter and tears of joy, the Orange Coast College Athletic Hall of Fame inducted four new members to its exclusive club.

Zoila Gomez (athlete), Al Irwin (coach), Jim Carnett (service) and Dan Quisenberry (athlete, posthumously) were honored before a gathering of family and friends in the Peterson Gym Foyer.

“Every year, it’s great to see just what this school has impacted so many people and how it’s changed their lives for the better,” Dean of Physical Education/Athletics Barbara Bond said. “The diversity of this group was remarkable – spanning five decades – but one thing has remained consistent through all of that time and that was what OCC has meant to these four people.”

Al Irwin -- OCC Football Coach, Swimming and Water Polo Coach, 1956-65

This Year's Hall of Famers
This year’s Hall of Famers and their presenters are (from left) Barry Wallace, retired OCC baseball coach; Marty Quisenberry, brother of the late Dan Quisenberry; Zoila Gomez, OCC track champion; Dave Fier, OCC volunteer cross country coach; Dave Grant, OCC president emeritus; Al Irwin, retired OCC coach; Jim Carnett, emeritus Director of Community Relations; and Leon Skeie, professor of physical education and athletics.

In the 1950s and '60s, Al Irwin was a fixture at Orange Coast College. Irwin began his career at Orange Coast in 1956 as the head football coach. That year, his lone season as the Pirates' head coach, he led his team to an 8-1-2 record, an Eastern Conference championship and a berth in the Potato Bowl. Illness forced Al out of football, but his coaching career continued as the Pirates swimming and water polo coach. From 1957-65, Irwin's water polo teams compiled a 136-74 record with two Eastern Conference championships and in that same span, he guided the swim program to a 114-21 record and eight consecutive EC titles. Following his Coast career, Irwin moved on to become the swimming and water polo coach at UC Irvine.

Zoila Gomez -- OCC Student, Cross Country and Track Athlete, 1998-2000

An athletic career that did not start until her senior year of high school, Zoila Gomez became a fast learner, literally, for the Orange Coast College cross country and track programs. OCC’s cross country team never suffered a defeat during her two seasons as she led the Pirates to back-to-back Orange Empire Conference, Southern California and state championships in 1998 and 1999. As a member of the Pirates track and field team, Zoila won eight individual Orange Empire Conference championships and four individual state titles, setting the school and state record in the 10,000 meters along the way. For her incredible stretch of success, Zoila was named OCC's Female Athlete of the Year two years in a row. At Adams State College in Alamosa, CO, Gomez won 10 conference titles, 11 All-American honors, six NCAA Division II national titles and was twice named the Division II Female Athlete of the Year (Cross Country in 2002 and Outdoor Track in 2004). She represented the United States in the marathon at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan and after a fourth-place performance at the 2008 Women's Marathon Olympic Trials in Boston, Zoila became the marathon alternate for the 2008 USA Olympic Team. She plans to continue her quest to represent USA in 2012.

Jim Carnett -- OCC Student, Sports Information Director (1971-1985), Director of Marketing and Community Relations and longtime supporter of Pirate Athletics, 1971-2008

For 46 years, Orange Coast College has been a part of Jim Carnett's life. Raised in Costa Mesa, Jim was a member of Costa Mesa High School’s first graduating class, and enrolled at Orange Coast College in 1962. He completed his A.A. and was editorial page editor of the school newspaper (The Barnacle). Jim earned a B.A. degree with honors in communications at Cal State Fullerton, and an M.A. in education at Pepperdine University. In addition to his marketing and PR duties, he served as Sports Information Director from 1971-1985. During his 36 years on OCC's staff, Jim won 41 first-place national, regional and state writing awards. He captured an unprecedented five first-place national Paragon Awards for feature writing, presented by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR). Jim served as public address announcer for OCC’s football team for 21 years (1986-2007), and for the men’s basketball team for 15 seasons (1971-85). At the time of his retirement in 2008, the press box at LeBard Stadium was named in his honor. In 2007, Jim received The Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into the Costa Mesa Hall of Fame. In 1990, he was given the California Community College Public Relations Organization’s (CCPRO) career achievement award –- the All PRO.

Dan Quisenberry -- OCC Student, Baseball Athlete, 1971-73

One of the most famous "names" to come out of Orange Coast College, Dan Quisenberry not only left his mark here at OCC, he left an unforgettable legacy in the Kansas City area. His 15 career wins are seventh-best all-time in OCC history. "Quiz" also posted a career 1.88 ERA for the Pirates, fourth-best in school history, and his 254 2/3 career innings is still the all-time record at Orange Coast. Following his career at La Verne University, Quisenberry was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Royals. He made his MLB debut on July 8, 1979, and he became one of the most dominant closers in the game. In 1980, "Quiz" helped lead the Royals to the World Series for the first time. In 1983, he became the first reliever to reach the 40-save mark and repeated the feat in 1984 with 44 saves and a 2.64 ERA, finishing runner-up for the American Cy Young Award in each of those seasons. Finally, in 1985, his 37 saves and 2.37 ERA helped lead the Royals back to the World Series, where they topped the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games for the ballclub's only World Series title. A three-time All-Star, Quisenberry was inducted into the OCC School Hall of Fame in 1983, the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame, also in 1998. Off the baseball field, Dan devoted countless hours to various charities in the area and helped raise millions of dollars during and after his playing career was over. In December of 1997, Dan was diagnosed with brain cancer and on Sept. 30, 1998, he passed away in Leawood, Kansas at the age of 45.

Rhapsody in Taps to Perform OC Premiere at OCC Faculty Dance Concert

Rhapsody in Taps
Rhapsody in Taps will appear October 30th
at the OCC Faculty Dance Concert
at the Robert B. Moore Theatre

A variety of different dance styles will be featured during Orange Coast College’s 34th Annual Faculty Dance Concert on Friday, Oct. 30th, at 8:00 p.m. in OCC’s Robert B. Moore Theatre, including an Orange County premiere by guest artists Rhapsody in Taps.

The concert, directed by Jeff Mayor, will feature the dancing and choreography of OCC dance faculty members Linda Sohl-Ellison, Monty Ellison, Amelie Hunter, Shana Menaker, Amy Fritzler, Kathy Kahn, Angelika Nemeth and Teresa Avina. A variety of dance styles will be represented in the concert, including modern, ballet, jazz, tap and world dance forms.

Hunter will perform a premiere ballet, "At Play In A Forest Of Light" with music composed by Maurice Ravel. The program also includes a Lebenese folk dance called the "Depke," a large group chain dance.

Rhapsody In Taps will perform its newest work, “Chugarump,” a dynamic ensemble piece featuring seven dancers and master percussionist Monti Ellison performing tap dance, bucket drumming and stick percussion.

This work is supported, in part, by a 2009 grant to Rhapsody In Taps from the National Endowment for the Arts.  The company's newest dancer, Caley-Ryan Carr, has been an OCC dance student for three years; he was invited into Rhapsody in Taps' apprenticeship program in May 2009.

Rhapsody In Taps' artists, led by Sohl-Ellison, have created a vast repertoire, celebrating the tap tradition and exploring new directions in tap choreography. Recognized for its choreographic invention and experimentation, Rhapsody In Taps has been a significant contributor to the worldwide resurgence of tap dance.

Now in its 46th year of existence, OCC’s Dance Department is one of the largest and most active to be found on any community college campus in the nation. A number of former Orange Coast dance students have gone on to professional careers. Many are dance teachers.

Advance general admission tickets, priced at $10, are on sale in OCC’s Bursar’s Office at (714) 432-5880. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.occtickets.com. Tickets will be available at the door for $14.
