Trustees Select Golden West College President Dr. Ken Yglesias as New Chancellor
begin
the monumental task of implementing Measure C and renovating
our colleges for the next generation of students.”
“This is an exciting time to become chancellor, and I’m thrilled,” said Dr. Yglesias. “The Coast District is a dynamic and rapidly changing organization. Rapid change is evident and surrounds us. Long time employees are retiring, new faculty and staff are beginning their careers here, fiscal realities are shifting, trends toward educational accountability are evolving and, yet, the organizational cultures at our three colleges must endure. I look forward to providing leadership and continuity, and to preserving an organizational culture that I know to be first rate.” Dr.
Yglesias has been with the Coast Community College
District since 1985, when he was hired
as Associate
Dean of Instruction at Coastline Community College’s
Westminster Center. From 1989 through 1991 he
held various administrative
positions at Coastline. He served as administrative
director of educational services at the Coast
Community College
District Office in Costa Mesa from 1991 through
1995, when he was hired as the President of Golden
West College in
Huntington Beach. Retiring Coast Community College District Chancellor to Begin New Career in United Arab Emirates
“I am so excited,” Vega said. “Dubai is an international, multi-cultural city. I was surprised by it when I first went to visit because it was not what I had expected. I didn’t even see a camel until my second visit! The city has positioned itself as a vacation destination for Europeans – it has fantastic beaches, international shopping, dining, resorts, hotels, you name it. It’s a fascinating place to be.” The international
flavor of the city – and of the
entire United Arab Emirates (UAE) – influences its
institutions of higher learning, as well. The eleven Higher
Colleges of Technology, which include Dubai Men’s
College, prepare students for careers in an international
environment. UAE nationals – men and women –are
offered technical and professional educational programs
taught using Western style educational techniques. As Director, Vega will serve as the CEO of the college, which employs 118 faculty members and serves more than 1,750 students. A celebration of Vega’s career will be held next Friday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Waterfront Hilton in Huntington Beach. For more information or to RSVP, please contact the District Foundation at (714) 438-4601.
All college and District offices will have expanded hours Monday through Thursday and close on Fridays again this summer in an effort to cut costs on utilities starting June 1. All District facilities will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the summer. Regular business hours will resume for all District facilities beginning August 20. The Coast Community College District Board of Trustees voted in favor of the altered summer schedule to save costs in the face of continued budget cuts from the State. The District adopted this schedule in summer 2003, and realized savings of more than $100,000 in energy costs alone.
The District’s Board of Trustees recognized 207 employees for long-standing service at a ceremony last Wednesday night, including five employees who have worked for the District for 35 years (see photo above). “It is because of the employees in this District – faculty, staff and administrators – that Coast District students receive a quality education at an affordable price right here in their own neighborhood,” George Brown, president of the Coast Community College District Board of Trustees, told a crowd gathered for the event. “It is with pleasure that I say thank you.” The 207 employees were recognized as follows:

Submitted by SPC August Montgomery, US Army Reserve and Coastline Student The time that I spent in Iraq was very difficult but taking college classes made my deployment much more enjoyable and rewarding. When I first deployed I was told that I wouldn't have time for on-line classes. I soon found that to be untrue. While there were some 80 hour weeks and we were on call 24 hours a day, after the first couple months, long busy weeks turned into the exception rather than the rule. There aren't many diversions in Iraq, mainly because you can't get outside the small fenced-in compound where we lived. As soon as we got Internet access, I began to pursue on-line classes more aggressively, and I happened upon your Web site. I researched many other online schools but they all proved too complicated to register. Your Web site was very simple. Registration was easy, and it was easy to access class information. Another thing that made taking classes much easier was the fact that I only had to get online once every week for about a half an hour. All the work I had to do could be done while I was waiting in a truck or when I had downtime in the office. The college courses made this dull time go by much faster. When I was first deployed I felt that I was wasting my time and that I would be far behind my peers when I came home. Thanks to Coastline I have the number of credits that I am supposed to have. In closing, I strongly praise your college for the opportunities
that you are giving soldiers around the world. Now, they
have no excuse not to take classes!

OCC Mathematics Professor, Kevin Shannon, Named County's Community College Teacher of the Year
Shannon, 53, a Costa Mesa resident, was notified of the award Wednesday afternoon (May 12) during a special ceremony at the Orange County Department of Education, in Costa Mesa. He was told of the honor by Orange County Department of Education superintendent, William M. Habermehl. Shannon is the fourth OCC faculty member to win the prestigious prize in the 13 years that the community college award has been given. Orange Coast College professor of mathematics, Dr. Sandra Savage, received the Community College Teacher of the Year Award for 1993-94. OCC art historian, Dr. Irini Vallera-Rickerson, was given the award in 1994-95. Steven J. Goetz, an OCC professor of counseling services was awarded the prize in 2000-01. Nominees for this year's award represented Orange County's nine community colleges. In addition to OCC, the colleges include Coastline, Cypress, Fullerton, Golden West, Irvine Valley, Saddleback, Santa Ana and Santiago Canyon. Shannon was lured to the Orange County Department of Education Office Wednesday on the pretext that he would be participating in a final interview session for the award. He wasn't aware that he had already been selected as the winner. Shannon seemed more than a little surprised when he walked into a conference room at the Department of Ed and was greeted by applause and back-slaps. "This is an enormous honor," he said after a long pause. "My students seem to appreciate what I do, but my selection for this honor was totally out of my hands. I feel extremely grateful." He said he plans to use the $15,000 to purchase a year of college for his 10-year-old son, Ryan, at the appropriate time. Or, perhaps he'll buy a semester of medical school for the youngster who aspires to become a doctor. "Kevin is deserving of this award," said OCC president, Farrell. "The college is very proud of him. He makes a difference in the lives of students."
A one-week faculty and staff excursion to Orange Coast College's British Columbia island, Rabbit Island, will be staged this summer by the college's Staff Development Department. The tour, led by marine science professor, Dennis Kelly, is set to run Sunday through Saturday, June 13-19. The trip is open to Coast District faculty and staff members, and to their adult companions. Registration deadline is Friday, June 4. Informational meetings about the excursion are scheduled for Wednesday, May 19, from 4-6 p.m., and Friday, May 21, from 3-5 p.m., in Room 115 of OCC's Lewis Center. Located approximately 50 miles north of the city of Vancouver, at the top of the Straight of Georgia, Rabbit Island is home to OCC's Wheeler Research Station. The heavily wooded 40-acre isle rests in a pristine archipelago. An abundance of narrow passages, beaches, and coves make for a protected paradise that teems with marine life. For information,
contact Kye Daniels in Staff Development at Ext. 25920.
