Project Voyager Update

New Avaya Voice Messaging System

Project Voyager Training Update

Voyager

By Jennifer Ortberg

I know many of you have been receiving inquiries from your faculty regarding not only this “Banner thing they keep hearing about”, but also Faculty Self Service. I am sure they are wondering what it does and how are they going to use it, but most of all, how are they going to learn to use it.

Over the last 4 months, in conjunction with Sungard Higher Ed (Banner), we have been conducting End User training for staff that will be utilizing Internet Native Banner (INB) to do their jobs.  Along with the campus trainers, we will continue to provide support and training throughout the summer and fall as we prepare to go live with the Student system.

The next cycle of formal training will be for the faculty on how they will monitor and coordinate their class rosters, track their teaching assignments and submit grades through Self Service.  We know this will be a big change for many, but in the long run, it will make everyone’s job easier and streamline many of our archaic paper processes.   There will be two primary mechanisms for training faculty, Web based training and a step by step User’s guide.  With hundreds of faculty to train, this was the best way to be successful in reaching the majority of faculty.  Of course we will also have open lab sessions throughout the fall and spring semesters for faculty who wish to take a more hand’s on approach to learning.

Prepare to Launch!Rocket

Project Voyager is preparing to launch with several mock registrations scheduled in the coming weeks.  If you are unable to join the fun at mock registration, please log in to Banner while at your workstation. By simply logging in, you will be helping us test the load on the system during heavy registration times.

Free Biotech Certificate

Coastline Offering Free Biotech Certificate

Coastline Community College, in partnership with the Orange County One-Stop Center, is offering a free certificate of achievement in Biological Technology. The certificate program is designed to prepare students for emerging careers in biomedical science, pharmaceutical research, genetic engineering and other medical research positions.

Qualifying students will receive a federal grant from the President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative, which pays for all program-related expenses. Enrollment is based on a pre-interview with an eligibility officer to determine income and/or employment need. In addition, the student must agree to join the work force in the biotech field immediately following completion of the program.  Students are also required to complete 25 college units from the summer 2007 through spring 2008 session.

Classes take place at Coastline’s Le-Jao Center in Westminster and at Coastline’s Garden Grove Center. Some courses can also be completed via distance learning though television, online or independent study classes.

“We are honored to work with the community to benefit future lives from this rewarding program,” said Jane Duncan, Program Supervisor of the One-Stop Center in Westminster. The One-Stop Center serves as the college’s link to the business community. Limited Spots Left for Gates-Backed Early College High School Freshman Class

Cost Mesa Center
Early College High School Site

Coastline Community College has only 40 freshman spots left for their innovative Early College High School (ECHS) program. ECHS is a unique school backed by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District that allows students to earn both a high school diploma and an Associate in Arts degree in just five years. The ECHS campus is located in Costa Mesa.

ECHS, launched in fall 2006, is made possible by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The establishment of the Coastline/Newport-Mesa ECHS is part of a national Early College High School Initiative, which is in the process of establishing 150 Early College High Schools across the country by the year 2008. The ECHS concept has been popular throughout the country because of the financial savings it offers to both parents and students. Students do not have to pay for college tuition,

fees, textbooks or supplies for the college courses they take during the five-year program.

Applications are currently being accepted to fill the freshman class, and admitted students will start the as 9th-grade students this fall. For more information, parents are encouraged to contact Principal Kathy Slawson at (949) 515-3382. Applications for ECHS are also available in the reception area of the Newport Mesa Education Center located at Baker Street and Bear Street in Costa Mesa.

Golden West College

GWC's Teacher of the Year

Yvonne Valenzuela

Yvonne Valenzuela is Golden West’s 2007 Teacher of the Year. Valenzuela is the Counselor in Student Services and GWC’s Puente Program Coordinator. Three nomination letters were submitted from students in the Puente program.

What a better honor for a teacher than to have students think so highly of her? Some of the student comments:

“Yvonne not only helps students understand the value of an education, she talks with the families of students who, due to their cultural background, might not consider education an important goal.”

“She gives her students a map--a map of their dream in life--and the only way to succeed is to pass these classes by giving 110%, the same 110% she gives and believes in…”

“She is like white on rice, checking up on you, emailing you or calling you.”

Yvonne originally planned to go to medical school and wanted to provide health care to those who came from similar cultural and economic backgrounds as her. Realizing she could do the same thing with education and reach a greater audience, she switched to education. Lucky for us!

Congratulations, Yvonne.  Good luck next year when the voting is done for the O.C. Teacher of the Year.

The Teacher of the Year Committee, a subcommittee of the Academic Senate, ranks the student nominations and makes the final selection. Our finalist will be honored next fall with other secondary and post-secondary faculty nominees for the Orange County Teacher of the Year Award. All nominees receive gifts and a check from the event sponsors.

GWC's Manager of the Year

Dwayne Thompson

The Coast District Management Association (CDMA) held its annual year-end social and the three colleges announced their respective manager of the year. GWC’s 2007 recipient is Dwayne Thompson, acknowledged for his significant accomplishments with college-wide planning.

In the past, different departments independently performed the annual processes. Now with Thompson’s technical expertise, campus staff has learned new ways to systematically perform, measure, and track these tasks.

Does Program Review sound familiar? Thompson should be credited for all his innovative work, dragging some along, kicking and screaming at times. But, his work continues to establish practices that will make this institution more accountable.

OCC Receives $400,000 Federal Grant to Enhance Student Success

piggy bankOrange Coast College has been awarded a $399,998 federal grant to strengthen and enhance student success on campus.

The grant was awarded June 14 by the United States Department of Education.

It’s anticipated that the grant will be awarded to the college every year for the next five years, totaling $2 million in funding. Twenty colleges and universities nationwide received the grant this year.

"Orange Coast College is delighted with the many opportunities that this grant will provide for its students," said OCC president, Robert Dees. "We’ll be able to dramatically enhance campus student support services. The impact of this grant on individual students will be dramatic and substantial."

The grant will allow OCC to open a Student Success Center on campus, and will provide an early-alert and student-tracking component to identify students who are experiencing academic difficulties, said Jess Craig, the college’s vice president of student services and author of the grant.

"Under our early-alert program, instructors will identify at-risk students in their classes who are struggling and will refer those students to the Student Success Center," Craig said. "At the center, students will receive extensive assistance.

"More than 20 referral categories for students have been identified, ranging from ‘poor attendance’ to ‘sleeping in class.’"
